GAZA BEACH: Wir feiern mit

Kunst- und Interventionsprojekt im öffentlichen Raum

(please scroll down for the english version)

Hintergrund

GazaBeach.at veröffentlicht werden.

Gate 48
Gate 48 was founded by three Israeli women, living in The Netherlands. Out of deep concern for all the different groups (ethnic, national, religious) living in Israel, we chose a critical point of view regarding Israel and the conflict it is in. We believe that the road of violence, which successive Israeli governments have adopted for more then 60 years, will never lead to a real solution. We believe the separation between both people, which has been imposed on both Israelis and Palestinians, only leads to more violence and hatred. http://www.gate48.org/

Gaza Beach: We Join the Party – public art intervention

Opening 27.5 / 17.00 at Kunsthalle Karlsplatz / Project Space

On the occasion of Tel Aviv's centennial, the city of Vienna has invited the state of Israel to stage part of its celebrations at a beach at the Danube Canal.

Under the title „Gaza Beach – Live Life Imprisonment Live“, several intervention projects will simultaneously be staged in public spaces. They are aimed at directing as much attention to Palestine as to Israel for the duration of the „Tel Aviv Beach.“

Background

According to a report on derStandard.at, the hip temporary event and entertainment mile that is run by the state of Israel is presenting itself as „urbane and cosmopolitan, featuring cultural and culinary treats“. As far as atmosphere goes, its lavish design is oriented towards the real Tel Aviv beaches, partner projects are being set up in New York, Paris, and Copenhagen.

“Our project is aimed at helping to create an authentic atmosphere and to enable the cooperation between Tel Aviv and its nearest partner city: Gaza in a neutral environment”, says Nico Serda, initiator of Gaza Beach.

While the people of Gaza City cannot take part in the centennial celebrations in Tel Aviv – just as Israel prohibits its civilian population from entering the Gaza Strip – the restrictions responsible for this inhumane situation will be lifted here in Vienna, at least temporarily and in part: The „Gaza Beach“ project invites all visitors at the Tel Aviv Beach to participate in its – involuntarily isolated – celebration.

In an interview Israel’s Ambassador to Austria gave the Austrian daily Die Presse, he expressed confidence that at Vienna’s Tel Aviv Beach, the famed contribution cultural and other local scenes make to an understanding among nations will not remain an empty cliché.

And he’s right.

Gaza Beach

For the duration of the „Tel Aviv Beach“ (May–September, 10 am–10 pm), people can spend some time in a container on an army truck – and have new insights about being imprisoned at the “Gaza Beach”.
The lettering above the windows reads: Gaza Beach: Live Life Imprisonment

There will be a screen and a Laptop where “inmates” can screen documentaries and photos live on the outside of the truck and write a blog that will be published on www.gazabeach.at.

An exhibition of Palestinian artists and artists who deal with the Middle East Conflict will show the ongoing cultural life in Palestine as well as different artistic approaches to the subject.
